This is a great book, which gets updated each year. It's full of really useful advice about the children's publishing industry, as well as names and addresses of publishing houses. It is usually available from W.H.Smith's

AOI - The Association of Illustrators
www.theaoi.com
This is an organisation based in London that offers all sorts of advice to illustrators. I think it's particularly useful if you are just starting out as a freelance illustrator or are a student. You would need to pay to become a member.

SOA - The Society of Authors
www.societyofauthors.org
You need to be published to be a member (see their criteria on their website) and there is a membership fee, but this is a great organisation. They offer all sorts of advice to their members as well as hosting events and conferences.

SCBWI - Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators

The Society of Children's Book Writers & Illustrators is the only international organisation to support both published and unpublished writers and illustrators of children's books. They have a great website with all sorts of events and support. There is an annual membership fee.

Business Link
www.BusinessLink.gov.uk
I have personally found Business Link, which is a nation-wide organisation, really helpful. They deal with all sorts of businesses including sole traders, which is what most illustrators are in business terms. Through them, I have got a lot of advice on bookkeeping, marketing, on-line selling etc. They have helped me to be much more business like and to learn how to make a living from what I do.

PLR - Public Lending Right
www.plr.uk.com
Public Lending Right makes annual payments to writers and other creators whose works are freely available in libraries.

DACS - The Design and Artists Copyright Society
www.dacs.org.uk
DACS help artists and visual creators receive recognition and reward for their work.
